STORM WATER MANAGEMENT

What is Storm Water Runoff?

Storm water runoff occurs when precipitation from rain or snow melt flows over the ground. Impervious surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent storm water from naturally soaking into the ground.

The Effects of Pollution.

Polluted storm water runoff can have many adverse effects on plants, fish, animals, and people:

Sediment can cloud the water and make it difficult or impossible for aquatic plants to grow. Sediment can also destroy aquatic habitats.

Excess nutrients can cause algae blooms. When algae die, they sink to the bottom and decompose in a process that removes oxygen from the water. Fish and other aquatic organisms can't exist in water without low dissolved oxygen levels.

Bacteria and other pathogens can wash into swimming areas and create health hazards, often making beach closures necessary.

Debris - plastic bags, six-pack rings, bottles, and cigarette butts - washed into water bodies - can choke suffocate, or disable aquatic life like ducks, fish, turtles, and birds.

Household hazardous wastes like insecticides, pesticides, paint, solvents, used motor oil, and other auto fluids can poison aquatic life. Land animals and people can become sick or die from eating diseased fish and shellfish or ingesting polluted water.

Polluted storm water often affects drinking water sources. This, in turn, can effect human health and increase drinking water treatment costs.

Why is Storm Water Run Off a Problem?

Storm water can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and flow into storm sewer systems which flow into the Darby Creek, which flows into the Delaware River, which ends up in the Delaware Bay. Anything that enters a storm water system is discharged untreated into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing, and providing drinking water. In the last year the street sweeper has removed 78 tons of debris off our streets in Sharon Hill. Most of that trash could have ended up in the Delaware Bay.

Helpful Tips to Prevent Storm Water Runoff Pollution

Mow High - set you mower at the highest setting to create deeper root systems. Leave grass clippings on the lawn to fertilize naturally.

Water Deeply - and only when necessary. Water at cool times of the day to prevent fungus growth and water evaporation. Consider using a soaker hose instead of a sprinkler.

Use Fertilizers and Pesticides Wisely - test the soil and apply only what is needed.

Reduce Mowable Lawn Size - create more garden areas using native plants. these areas increase storm water infiltration and wildlife habitat.

Compost or Mulch Yard Waste - don't leave it in the street or sweep it into storm drains or streams.

Cover piles of dirt or mulch being used in landscaping projects.

Pet Waste - When walking your pet clean up and dispose of the waste properly. Flushing is the best method as it then goes into the sanitary sewer system and not into storm drains.

Auto Care - Use a commercial car wash that treats or recycles water or wash your car on you yard so the water infiltrates into the ground. Repair leaks and dispose of used auto fluids and batteries at designated drop-off or recycling locations.

SECURITY LIGHT BULBS

Sharon Hill Borough Council has made available to all residents of Sharon Hill a multi-purpose security light bulb. The bulb acts like a regular bulb until needed in an emergency. When in distress, just flicking the light switch on and off activates the light bulb's emergency beacon, causing it to flash on and off continuously. The emergency beacon deactivates by turning the light switch off. Placed in a fixture outside the home, it can help emergency personnel locate a home quickly. It also can be used inside the home or building. The bulb is guaranteed to last 2,000 hours. It is visible at night as far as the eye can see and visible to 125 yards during the day.

The bulbs normally sell for $19.95. Sharon Hill purchased 400 emergency beacons for $6.00. Any resident of the borough can purchase one for $6.00 at Borough Hall.

Any senior citizen, 65 years of age or older, and is a resident of Sharon Hill will be eligible for one FREE beacon.
